  • Ollantaytambo: Ancestral History
  • Chinchero: Land of the Rainbow

But the Sacred Valley is much more than a tourist destination; it’s a journey to the very heart of Andean culture, where you’ll meet the descendants of the Incas and discover their millennia-old traditions, from textile crafting to the earth payment ceremony.

Sacred Valley of Cusco

Location

Located 35 kilometers northeast of Cusco and about 600 meters below the level of the Imperial City. The highest-altitude town is Chinchero, which sits at 3,762 meters (12,342 ft). The town of Urubamba is one of the lowest, at 2,857 meters (9,373 ft).

Climate

The Sacred Valley has a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 21 to 23 degrees Celsius during the day and dropping to as low as 4 degrees Celsius at night. There is little variation in temperature throughout the year. The only difference you’ll notice in winter (mid-May to late August) is slightly colder nights.

It has two seasons:

Dry season from April to October: During these months, the sun shines brightly, and it may not rain. It’s the ideal time to visit as the days are clear, offering better views of the landscapes.
Rainy season from November to March: During this season, rains are more frequent, but you’ll also get to see lush green landscapes.

Pisaq: Cultural Treasure in the Heart of the Sacred Valley

Pisac Archaeological Park

Comprising 40 terraces, 20 towers, a cemetery, and 5 neighborhoods with different architectural styles, history, culture, and natural beauty merge to create an unforgettable experience. Its cobbled streets and ancient buildings transport us to bygone times, along with the warmth of its people.

Market of Colors and Flavors:

Its famous artisan market comes alive with the hustle and bustle of local traders and visitors seeking to take a piece of the Andean magic, considered one of the largest local markets in the region.
Here, you can lose yourself among stalls filled with colorful textiles, handmade jewelry, and other treasures crafted by the talented artisans of the region, along with delicious local cuisine.

Urubamba: Exquisite Gastronomy

A town famous for its traditional Andean cuisine, from traditional oven-roasted guinea pig to succulent alpaca meat, alongside inhabitants proud of their Incan heritage who welcome you with unmatched hospitality.

Ollantaytambo: Ancestral History

Ollantaytambo Ruins

Located 80 km from the city of Cusco – in the Urubamba province – and 40 km from Machu Picchu, this archaeological site has preserved over time its houses, streets, and canals from the time of the Tahuantinsuyo.

A strategic location used as a military, religious, and agricultural center still dazzles with its stone terraces and imposing constructions over four meters high. It’s the place where Manco Inca faced Hernando Pizarro’s Spanish troops and emerged victorious. Thus, every stone in this fascinating place tells a captivating story about the glorious past of the Incas.

Gateway to Machu Picchu

In addition to its rich history and charming atmosphere, Ollantaytambo is also an important starting point for those wishing to explore the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu. From here, you can take the train to Aguas Calientes and then embark on the exciting hike to the top of this globally renowned wonder, following in the footsteps of the ancient Incas.

Chinchero Archaeological Center

Comprising 12 peasant communities whose main activity is the cultivation of tubers and livestock. On the other hand, textile work is one of the main attractions, crafted by local women and one of the few places where bartering is still practiced.

Archaeological Park

It consists of a network of terraces, stairs, stone enclosures, terraces, water channels, Inca temples, and tunnels (chinkanas) in an area of up to 43 hectares of agricultural land.

In summary, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is much more than just a tourist destination; it’s a place where the grandeur of the past intertwines with the beauty of the present to offer you a unique and unforgettable experience. From the impressive ruins of ancient cities to the breathtaking natural landscapes, every corner of this enchanted valley invites you to immerse yourself in the magic of a millennia-old culture.
