  • A Jewel in the Mountains

This place not only offers unique views, but it’s also brimming with energy and natural beauty that will make you feel at one with nature.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to make the most of your visit. If you’re ready to discover this paradise, join us on this adventure and be amazed by everything Lake Humantay in Cusco has to offer.

Why is Lake Humantay the Ideal Destination for Your Next Adventure?

Lake Humantay (Laguna Humantay) is not just a lake; it is a pilgrimage. Located at the foot of the Humantay mountain, it was sacred to the Incas and remains a place of offering for the local people.

  • The Color: The water is a vivid turquoise, created by the minerals washing down from the melting glacier above. It looks almost artificial, but I assure you, it is nature’s own palette.
  • The Challenge: Reaching it requires effort. It is a steep hike, but that effort makes the reward so much sweeter. It is a micro-adventure that fits perfectly into a Cusco itinerary.

This destination is a shining example of the diverse Tourism in Peru, offering a blend of natural wonder and spiritual significance that appeals to the modern explorer.

DID YOU KNOW?
Apachetas: As you hike, you will see small piles of stones along the path. These are Apachetas, offerings made by travelers to the Apus (mountain spirits) asking for safe passage and good luck. Feel free to make your own—with respect.

Everything You Need to Know to Make the Most of Lake Humantay

Planning is everything when you venture into the high Andes. Let’s break down the logistics of the Lake Humantay tour.

The Best Time to Visit Lake Humantay

The weather in the Andes is seasonal.

  • Dry Season | May – October: This is the golden window. The skies are blue, and the sun makes the turquoise water pop. However, it can be cold, especially in the early morning.
  • Rainy Season | November – April: The path can be muddy, and clouds might obscure the glacier. But the landscape is incredibly green.

GRAND ADVICE
My Advice: Aim for the shoulder months like May or September for a balance of good weather and fewer crowds.

How Long is the Hike to Lake Humantay Cusco?

The drive from Cusco takes about 3 hours to the trailhead at Soraypampa.

  • The Hike Up: It typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours. It is steep and steady.
  • The Hike Down: About 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Total Time: Expect a full day trip, leaving Cusco around 4:00 AM and returning by 5:00 PM.

IMPORTANT FACT
Lake Humantay Elevation: The lake sits at a staggering 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level. The trailhead is at 3,800 meters. You are climbing 400 vertical meters at very high altitude.

Is it Difficult to Reach Lake Humantay Cusco?

This is the question on everyone’s mind.
Is it hard? Yes.
Is it impossible? No.

The difficulty comes almost entirely from the altitude. The path itself is wide and safe, but the thin air makes your heart race and your legs feel heavy.

  • The “Soroche” Factor: If you are not acclimatized, this hike will be a struggle. We recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before attempting this Lake Humantay tour.
  • The Horse Option: If you feel tired, you can rent a horse from the local community at the trailhead to take you most of the way up. There is no shame in this; it supports the locals and saves your energy for the photos!

To prepare for this, check out our guide on What to Wear in Peru to ensure you have the right gear. So go for it! Don’t let the altitude hold you back and experience this adventure with Peru Gran Travel. We’ll be with you every step of the way, making sure your experience at Humantay Lagoon in Cusco is unforgettable.

Safety Tips in High Mountain

As your host, your safety is my priority. Here is how to conquer the mountain safely.

  1. Acclimatize: Do not do this on Day 1. Let your body adjust to Cusco first.
  2. Hydrate: Drink water before you are thirsty. The dry mountain air dehydrates you quickly.
  3. Dress in Layers: You will start cold, get hot while hiking, and freeze again at the lake when you stop moving. A windbreaker and a fleece are essential.
  4. Slow and Steady: This is not a race. The tortoise wins here. Walk slowly (“paso de inca”) and breathe deeply.
  5. Listen to Your Guide: Our guides at Peru Grand Travel carry oxygen and first aid kits. If you feel dizzy or nauseous, tell them immediately.

The Spiritual Connection at Lake Humantay Cusco

For the Andean people, Lake Humantay is a living entity. The mountain Humantay is an Apu, a protector spirit.
When you arrive at the shore, take a moment of silence. Many visitors perform a small “Pago a la Tierra” (payment to the earth) using three coca leaves (K’intu). You blow on the leaves, make a wish or give thanks, and place them under a stone.

It is a beautiful way to connect with the culture and the spirit of the place, beyond just taking a selfie.

Activities You Can Do at Lake Humantay

Besides hiking, the Lake Humantay tour offers several experiences.

  • Horseback Riding: As mentioned, a great way to enjoy the scenery without the cardio workout.
  • Meditation: Find a quiet rock away from the main crowd. The silence of the glacier is profound.
  • Discover the legend of the lagoon: Listen to the fascinating ancestral legend that explains the origin and significance of Humantay Lagoon.
  • Participate in an ancestral ceremony: Experience a traditional ceremony to pay homage to Pachamama and the mountain spirits.
  • Photography: The light changes constantly. Walking around the edge of the lake gives you different angles of the reflection.
  • Birdwatching: Look for the Andean goose (Huallata) or even a condor soaring above the peaks.

Frequently Asked Questions | FAQ

Can I swim in Lake Humantay?

No. Swimming is prohibited. The water is freezing (glacial melt) and, more importantly, it is a source of drinking water for communities downstream. We must respect the purity of the site.

How hard is the hike really?

It is considered Moderate to Challenging solely due to altitude. The path is clear, but the lack of oxygen makes it feel much harder than a normal 1.5-hour hike.

Is there a restroom at the lake?

There are basic restrooms at the trailhead (Soraypampa) and usually one midway up (costs 1 or 2 soles). There are no facilities at the lake itself. Go before you start climbing!

Do I need a ticket?

Yes, there is an entrance fee to the community of Mollepata. If you book a tour with Peru Grand Travel, check if this is included (usually yes).

Can I go with children?

It is tough for young kids. We recommend it for active children aged 10 and up who are acclimatized. Younger kids might need a horse.

What if I can’t make it to the top?

There is no shame in turning back or renting a horse. Listen to your body. The view from halfway up is still spectacular.
